Shropshire was named recently in ABTA’s top ten Destinations to Watch 2024, and has plenty to offer holiday makers and day-trippers – and the Northern part of the county is no exception. Ellesmere, one of the jewels of north Shropshire, has been captivating visitors for generations with its picturesque lakes (meres), sweeping countryside and boundless opportunities for outdoor activities…
The Mere
The town itself sits on the banks of the ‘The Mere’ - the largest of the nine meres and mosses to be found in this unique landscape, and fed by natural springs and streams. It was created by the retreating ice age and subsequent melt water some 10,000 years ago, and it covers over 48 hectares. Throughout history, the meres have been a popular destination for leisure and recreation. In the Victorian era, the development of the railway made Ellesmere and its meres accessible to tourists from across the country. Visitors to the area to enjoy boating, fishing, and picnicking by the water's edge.
It has been awarded a prestigious Green Flag to recognise it being one of the best green spaces in the country, which makes it the perfect spot for a boat ride, leisurely stroll, or watching the world go by with a coffee.
Adventure Awaits
Beyond the tranquil meres lies a countryside waiting to be explored. Lace up your walking boots and set out on an adventure along the myriad of scenic trails that wind their way through this unspoilt landscape, right on the border between England and Wales. The nearby Fenns, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve is part of Britain’s third largest lowland raised bog Site of Special Scientific Interest. Take a stroll along The Llangollen Canal, wander through ancient woodlands, across open meadows, and soak in the sights and sounds of nature all around you.
Food and Drink
The area offers a delightful array of eateries that cater to every taste. Begin your gastronomic journey at Dockett Restaurant in Whitchurch, where globally inspired creations and locally sourced ingredients blend seamlessly, in what the Michelin Guide describes as ‘imaginative dishes underpinned by a strong classical base’. Meze in the heart of Ellesmere offers a delicious taste of Greece, and for a taste of authentic Italian cuisine, head to Etzio in Whitchurch. For relaxed lunches and delicious coffee on the mere-side, try The Boat House.
