The Shropshire Distillery Story
The Shropshire Distillery is owned and run by husband and wife team, Emma and Gareth.
Driven by a love of gin and a desire to create a business that fitted in with family life, we made the move from Lancashire to Ellesmere in 2012 and quickly settled into Shropshire life. A few years later in 2018, The Shropshire Distillery began its story. Along with our daughter, Lily, and mascot Calla the Hungarian Vizsla, we set the ‘Gin Shed’ up as our first distillery, located at our family home.
Our first gin, Shire Gin was launched on 1st July 2018, followed by our Shire Spiced Gin in December 2018 with our third edition Shire Cherry Gin being released in February 2019.
As gin lovers, we had tasted many over the years, but found we were disappointed by some that turned out not to be created as they claimed and were lacking any real personal touch or love. As creative personalities we began discussing the possibility of producing classic, honest spirits on our terms, filled with our ideas and inspirations.
When we first moved from Lancashire to Shropshire, we were both commuting 120 miles each day for work. I worked in education and Gareth as a chemical engineer. After a little while, I was able to move work closer to home, whilst Gareth continued to commute. Behind the scenes it was all systems go for building the Gin Shed and completing all of the required paperwork and licensing.
As a motorbike enthusiast and experienced motorbike racer and test rider, an opportunity arose for Gareth to pursue a consulting role in this sector. This led to me taking the exciting leap to make The Shropshire Distillery my full-time role, whilst Gareth works in the distillery around his other work. I am proud to be uniquely positioned as one of few female distillers in the industry.
We have our own Reverse Osmosis system on site and use this to purify our water, which is then blended with our gins to reduce the % ABV of our distilled gins.
We released our first Shire Gin in July 2018, followed by our Spiced Gin in December 2018. One year later, in July 2019, upon returning from a family holiday, we were thrilled to be informed that our spirits had won two International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) awards.
We are thrilled to be a part of an elite group of IWSC winners. These awards set the international benchmark for quality and award excellence in spirits worldwide. For half a century the IWSC has been recognising and rewarding the very best wines and spirits in the world.
Our ethos is to create classic, true, honest and handcrafted spirits, and to win such prestigious recognition in just our second year of business is such an honour and something we are incredibly proud of.
So, what’s next for us? The big move has happened into our lovely new, purpose built larger distillery. This means that we can expand our offer of experiences and share an insight into our world and share the journey of our classic spirits with more of you! With rustic, wooden and industrial vibes and a family welcome and feel we look forwards to welcoming you through the doors!
We have five new copper additions to the still family for you all to use as a part of our gin experiences. This allows social distancing, in future, we have the capacity to increase this to 10-12 stills.
Other future plans include exciting new collaborations, two special limited-edition gins for Christmas and, of course, we are always working on developing inspired new releases – keep your eyes peeled!
We love collaborations and new challenges. Keep your eyes peeled on this page as we have some exciting new partnerships coming up!
We have produced a bespoke blue gin for Wyle Blue Bar in Shrewsbury. Just like our cherry gin, this is coloured completely naturally following distillation.
We also team up with James Sherwin of Wild Shropshire and produce 2-4 locally foraged gins each year, which is wonderful to do.
Our Nightingale House Gin is a limited-edition collaboration. £8 from every bottle of this sold will be donated to Nightingale House Hospice in support of their fantastic work and care for their patients and families.
Working with so many different people and sharing ideas for exciting innovations is so rewarding.
